STUDIO:DETROIT is an integrated architectural exploration education and mentoring program designed for highly motivated high school students who have been traditionally under-represented in the field of architecture. It is a unique opportunity for interested Detroit area high school juniors and seniors to learn about and explore the possibilities of a career as an architect as well as be matched early in their exploration to mentors in the field. STUDIO:DETROIT is initially designed as a 14-week course for 15-20 students. The curriculum takes a practical, hands-on approach to the study of architecture through the integration of studio work, educational field trips, seminars and lectures. The core elements of the architectural exploration program are:

• Design Studio: Students will directly experience the place where the majority of academic and professional architectural work is done, the design studio. Students will work both collaboratively and individually in an open office-like environment with instructors, professional, visitors, mentors and each other to produce architectural ideas, drawings, models and projects.
• Professional, Academic and Architectural Tours: Students will have the opportunity to meet and engage the academic and professional community, as well as expand their knowledge of both the education (university), production (office) and the product (buildings) of the architect.
• Mentors: Students will have the opportunity to develop supportive and tutorial ties between future and existing professionals, academics and college students who will help nurture and guide the development of their architectural interests through encouragement, advise and networking.

Through these program areas, students employ the tools of drawing, drafting, digital media, hands-on model-making and building while learning the basics of how to apply their newfound knowledge to real world conditions in and around the Detroit area.
